" HUMS - Health and Usage Monitoring System for Military Ground Systems"
Geoff Rowlands - nCode International

HUMS, Health and Usage Monitoring systems have become an increasingly desirable addition for military land vehicle operation. The techniques have been in use on Aircraft for some time but the advantages of HUMS are now being appreciated for vehicles too. The aim is to ensure maximum availability of assets at minimum cost. This can be done using on-board sensor systems to predict early failure, and to advise when servicing or replacement of major systems is needed. A good deal of information is already available in CAN networks installed on the vehicle, but this data may not be in a form that is readily suitable for damage analysis. The challenge is to gain the required data while meeting the limited data bandwidth available on the vehicle. The key to this is to identify the needs of the user of the data, and then tailor the data accordingly. Many of the techniques developed in the data collection, processing, and modelling for the commercial ground vehicle industry are applicable to this task, with some modification.
